Skin cancer occurs when skin cells grow abnormally due to damage, often caused by sun exposure. The three most common types are:
● Basal Cell Carcinoma: Formed in the base, or basal cells lowest in your skin, this is the most common form of cancer accounting for 85% of skin cancers. ● Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Originating in the top layers of the skin, this type makes up about 10% of skin cancers. ● Melanoma: One of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer, melanoma begins in melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigment. Although it represents just 5% of skin cancers, malignant melanoma can spread quickly to other parts of the body.
Early detection of any form of carcinoma can lead to a 99% survival rate. This is why regular screening is essential.
Skin cancer symptoms vary, but key signs include new growths, changes in existing moles, or sores that won’t heal. Changes in a mole's size, shape, or color can be an indication of skin cancer.
The ABCDEs of moles—Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color changes, Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, and Evolving appearance—are essential in identifying potential skin cancer.
The primary cause of skin cancer is excessive UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds. Protecting yourself with sunscreen, clothing, and shade is crucial, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun’s rays are strongest.
Monthly self-examinations and yearly dermatologist visits are critical for early detection. At-home screenings are easier with a partner or a mirror to check hard-to-see areas like the back. If you notice any unusual spots or moles, particularly those fitting the ABCDE criteria, it's essential to see a dermatologist right away.
Preventing skin cancer starts with protecting your skin. Wear sunscreen like EltaMD, with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply consistently–every two hours–throughout the day, and avoid tanning beds. Limiting sun exposure during peak hours and wearing protective clothing can also reduce your risk.
If skin cancer is detected, it is crucial to remove it promptly. Depending on the type, and progression, treatment can include:
● Chemotherapy Cream- these types of creams attack the abnormal cells and destroy them, helping to clear superficial skin cancers. ● Curettage and Electrodessication- Cancer is scraped off, and the remaining cells are destroyed with electric current. ● Surgical Excision- Cancerous tissue is removed with either a scalpel or a razor-like tool. ● Mohs Surgery- The cancer is removed layer by layer until it is determined that no cancer cells remain.
At Draper Dermatology, we are experts in several forms of skin cancer treatment, and will get you the care you need.
